It's summer time in an election year and out come the flip-flops. Recently, Senator Barack Obama has been pandering towards the center in hopes of dispelling the notion that he's inexperienced or too liberal. In the process of kissing-up to moderates, Obama has been forced to do a complete reversal on many of his previous positions. The candidate for "change" isn't failing to deliver--he's changing his own views every day. Here are just a few of the flip-flops, pardon me, "nuanced" statements from Senator Obama:
Opinions expressed by News Buckit writers are expressly their own and may not represent the opinions of The News Buckit, its staff members, or its editors.
- September 2007, Senator Obama says he will accept public financing only to break his promise entirely by June 2008.
- This past January when Unions were supporting Clinton and Edwards, Obama called donations from Unions "special interest" money only to later call them the "representatives of the working people" once he began to gain their support.
- In January of 2004, he said it was time to lift the embargo on Cuba, but in August of 2007, he said the embargo should remain as "an important inducement for change".
- March 2004, Obama says that he's opposed to cracking down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants. In January 2008, he stated "we do have to crack down on those employers that are taking advantage of the situation."
He abandoned public campaign financing after years of championing it. Backed a compromise on wiretap legislation that gives telecom companies retroactive immunity for helping the government conduct spying without warrants. Dumped his controversial pastor of two decades--then his church--after saying he could no more abandon the pastor than abandon his own grandmother. He said he wouldn't wear the U.S. flag pin because it had become a substitute for true patriotism, then started wearing it. Ramped up his courtship of unions. Shifted from a pledge to protect working-class families from tax increases to a far more expensive promise not to raise taxes on families that earn up to $250,000 a year. Turned to longtime D.C. Democratic wise men to run his vice-presidential search and staff his foreign-policy brain trust.
And while I like seeing the Senator support the Second amendment and sport an American flag lapel pin, it seems obvious to anyone watching that his reasons for doing so are as transparent as glass and his sincerity is non-existent at best. These aren't positions he believes in (Based on his previous rhetoric, they obviously are not). They are positions he has to espouse from now to November to get elected.
Wow, a politician saying whatever will get him elected and waffling all over the political spectrum. My what change Senator Obama brings us!
